rest were considered normal. It is well established that the abnormal binding of nDNA by serum antibody has a greater sensitivity than the lupus erythematosus cell phenomenon, and higher specificity than the antinuclear antibodies test, but both of these are used more frequently than the anti-DNA test as a confirmatory test for SLE. The Amersham kit contains all the reagents and instructions necessary to allow the nDNA assay to be performed in any laboratory with a gamma counter. Contrary to several studies citing the lack of specificity of the radioimmunoassay methodology for detection of antibodies to native deoxyribonucleic acid, the nDNA antibody assay kit by Amersham has proved to be both specific (97%) and sensitive (89%) (Table 1). If only for these reasons alone, it appears to be an excellent method for a routine clinical laboratory.

It is characterized by fever, pancytopenia, liver failure, coagulopathy, and neurologic symptoms and high serum ferritin. Anticardiolipin Antibodies in Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Background: Antiphospholipid antibody syndrome (APS) can either occur as a primary syndrome or associated with other autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Anticardiolipin antibody (aCL) of IgG and/or IgM isotype in blood, measured by a standardized ELISA is the most acceptable laboratory criteria. APS IgG isotype, particularly IgG2 subclass is more strongly associated ...

Clinical utility of common serum rheumatologic tests.

Serum rheumatologic tests are generally most useful for confirming a clinically suspected diagnosis. Testing for rheumatoid factor is appropriate when rheumatoid arthritis, Sjögren's syndrome or cryoglobulinemia is suspected. Antinuclear antibody testing is highly sensitive for systemic lupus erythematosus and drug-induced lupus. Anti-double-stranded DNA antibodies correlate with lupus nephriti...

Differences in immunochemical characteristics of cryoglobulins in rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus and their complement binding properties.

Cryoglobulins isolated from sera of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were analysed for their immunoglobulin, antibody, and complement components. In both disease categories the cryoglobulins contained predominantly IgG with lesser amounts of IgM and IgA, but relative to serum more IgM was concentrated in the cryoglobulins. IgM rheumatoid factor was ...
